Hey, is public speaking top of your marketing strategy? If it's not, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. So let's get onto the show.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:00:29]:
Hey, everybody. I am so excited that you're here. And right now, I am in Spain as I am recording this. This is just something that was, just kinda, like, came to my mind, and I really wanted to get this out to you. So if you're noticing any sort of acoustic differences than normal people coming and going, as I'm not in a room. I mean, there's the beautiful library that is in this hotel. If you were following me on Instagram, you were kinda like a fly on the wall as I was walking the last 115 kilometers of the Camino here in Spain, and it has been quite a journey. I will be debriefing and sharing more on that particular I will be sharing more on that in a future episode.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:01:20]:
So is speaking in top of your marketing, or is it like social media is first and doing the DM strategy and going to do, you know, some sort of like virtual networking event. Is that top of your strategy? You know, is speaking something that's like on the bottom, is it an afterthought? Are you waiting to actually get invited to speak or is speaking something like this is top of my marketing strategy. It's right up there at the top. I want you to just like, think about where is speaking in your marketing strategy. For a lot of people that I have conversations with speaking is sometimes on the bottom. Sometimes it's not even a thought. Sometimes it's that I'll get to it one day, but you're really missing out on such a huge opportunity because, you know, as the speaker, you are the person that is looked at as the authority in the room, sharing your brilliance, sharing your knowledge, sharing your thought leadership with others. And that room of people, whether it is a in person or whether it is a virtual event, you know, those people who are in the room listening to you have the problem that you solve or are interested in the problem that you solve.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:02:55]:
This is something that has, maybe you have like an evergreen topic that people love to hear about. Again, you get to share your thought leadership on your evergreen topic, but you may maybe yours is not an evergreen topic. And when I say evergreen topic, the evergreen topics are like cybersecurity, something that people are always going to keep wanting to know. Leadership is also something that is very evergreen. Website, social media, there are so many topics out there that are very, very evergreen that people constantly want to keep learning a little bit more, learning a little bit more. And it's your opportunity to share your thought leadership. It's your opportunity to do what Dan Kennedy calls a dramatic demonstration and doing a dramatic demonstration really helps people get a sampling of what you're like. So think about when you go to the grocery store or like here in Spain, you know, when we were walking into some of the cute little stores near the cathedral's courtyard, you Now there were people that were standing outside with little samples of Santiago cake.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:04:09]:
They just wanted to, like, have a sampling. Come on. And a dramatic demonstration is when you are speaking, it is a sampling of what it would be like to work with you. But those people are absorbing your brilliance, your knowledge, how you work with people. Like they get to learn about that because you're gonna do some storytelling and it's so much easier. But a lot of times people say, oh, but I gotta be posting on social media, like 3 times a day. Or even if you're only doing it once. I mean, that's very time consuming.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:04:43]:
I want you to think about, like, how much time does it take you to write a post, create the graphic? So I just recently learned of an event that actually does have my ideal clients, and it's now on my radar. Unfortunately, I can't attend this year's event, but I will be attending like, it's on my calendar. I'm gonna get on this mailing list. I'm going to attend for 2020 5. I can't believe we're saying that already. And that's gonna be one way that I'm either going to get to know the event organizers, you know, just be face to face with other people because I already know from clients who have attended this event, that there are people who are interested in learning how to speak that want to get on the stage. So this is gonna be a group of people that will be my ideal clients, but also it's an opportunity for me to get to know the event organizers and possibly be able to either speak on the stage or do a breakout session, whether that's live or maybe even like a bonus that could be done virtually as a pre event. There are lots of different ways that we can actually handle this.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:05:58]:
And while I've been here in Spain, you know, I actually have been talking to some of the other ladies that I was on this tour with and some of them are coaches and consultants. And we had conversations around speaking, especially when it's like, hey, what do you do? And so whenever somebody hears what I do, they say, oh my God, every time. And And so I heard this a few times while I've been out here. Every time I speak, I get clients. So I always follow that up with, you know, how often are you speaking? And the most common answer was not enough. And that usually comes down to just not having a process for turning each event into more events. So that's how do I leverage each of those events into more? How do I get more speaking spinoff business? And that comes down to having that process of, you know, how you are getting testimonials and then referrals from whoever hired you. And also just really paying attention to audience members because people will come up to you and say, oh my god.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:07:04]:
I'm also part of this other group. You'd be a perfect speaker for, but they have to know that you're available to be hired. And that comes from just planting a seed in your speech, letting people know that there are other speeches that you have, that you could be hired for.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:07:21]:
So this is all the sort of things that I work with my clients and in my group programs. And you can find all of that information on my website, if that is something that you are interested in learning how to do, but really having a process for also getting booked. So I wanna challenge you to make speaking top of your marketing strategy for your business. And especially if you're a coach, a consultant or a service provider, What if for the next 60 to 90 days, you made finding speaking opportunities, building relationships with meeting planners, and also just outreach. So those are 3 different things that you can be doing. I'd like you to be looking for events, having conversations with people, building relationships with those people who can actually put you in front of their audience, whether that is a mastermind run by another coach, whether it's a membership that is run by a coach or a consultant. You know, there are so many different opportunities that are out there. So this is my challenge for you.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:08:36]:
If you just spent the next 60 to 90 days making this a top priority, let's see how many bookings you could actually get on your calendar. That's what I wanna challenge you to. And if you're like, I just don't even know where to start. So I have 2 suggestions for you. They are 2 different podcast episodes of mine that I think that you should go and listen to. And they are 195, you know, stop waiting. Five reasons that there's no perfect time to actually start speaking. This is also gonna kind of reinforce and give you some inspiration to get out there and get more speaking events.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:09:17]:
And also 179, the consequences of not using speaking again, a little bit of inspiration with a little bit of know how here's what you can do to get started now. But if you have had some speaking events under your belt, here's what I want you to do. I want you to reach out to those places that you've spoken for. So many people think that's 1 and done when you actually can go back to those people and have conversations to get re fired. And as you might have heard in episode 205, which was a speaker breakthrough session, where I spoke with somebody who is a coach consultant and she helps people with LinkedIn. And it was like, her big question was, how do I get more speaking events? And I was like, let's start with your warm market. Yeah. The people that you've already spoken for, that's one of the best places.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:10:15]:
So if you haven't listened to that episode, I wanna encourage you to go back and listen to that episode and then start applying that. And one other thing that I wanna encourage you to do, I am starting to do community call. These are once a month. They are no charge, free to use, free for you, like meaning it doesn't cost anything. And what it is, these community calls are gonna be a mini training followed by q and a. You can ask me your questions right then and there, get answers and also some networking. Because what I have found that people really do overlook is building relationships also with other people who are speaking. So that's a wonderful opportunity.
Laurie-Ann Murabito [00:11:00]:
So those community calls are once a month and you can sign up for those atspeakandstandout.comforward/community. Again, this is no cost sign up today, the next 2 months, the may event, and also the June event are already up there. So feel free to sign up for those.
